In a display of support and solidarity for the people of Ukraine, U2‘s Bono and The Edge have performed a surprise acoustic set in the capital Kyiv.
The performance in a Kyiv subway station-turned-bomb shelter came in response to a personal invitation to the band from Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The stripped-back performance featured versions of the band’s hits “Desire” and “Vertigo” along with a cover version of the Ben E King classic “Stand By Me” which was dedicated to the Ukrainian people.
Bono and The Edge tweeted on Saturday that they had accepted the Ukrainian President’s invitation to play.
President @ZelenskyyUa invited us to perform in Kyiv as a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian people and so that’s what we’ve come to do. — Bono and The Edge #StandWithUkraine
